It was many years in the making but Castaway Crystal and myself finally made it to Cat Island, a long narrow island about 117 miles south of Nassau. Some of you might know we tried to make a stop at Cat Island during a long and problematic yacht cruise from Miami a couple years ago, we never made it due to terrible weather and boat issues. You can read about that here.
But good things come to those who are patient, a skill I am slowly learning. We spent 5 days on Cat Island, exploring beaches, talking to locals and posting up at eclectic beach bars to enjoy a few ice cold Kaliks, all the while taking lots and lots of pictures. You can find many of those photos on the RumShopRyan Instagram and Facebook as well as Castaway Crystal.
We have a lot to tell you about Cat Island, but first we wanted to share with you our experience at where we stayed, Fountain Bay Resort & Marina.
About Fountain Bay Resort
Located just minutes from New Bight airport, Fountain Bay Resort sits on a stunning crescent beach with soft white sand that your feet sink into. The shallow bay glows blue as the sun climbs into the sky and you have your choice of kayaks or paddle boards to explore the waters.
I was trying to think of how or why this bay and or resort was called Fountain Bay. Then I got to looking at some of the drone photos and videos I took and maybe figured it out. On each side of the bay there are long shallow tidal lagoons. As the tide comes and goes, these lagoons empty and fill, creating brisk currents and moving sand bars. It’s a thing of beauty to watch the water come and go as you sit on your patio with nothing but the sound of quietness in your ears and a cold drink in your hand. I could be wrong, but that’s why I think this place is called Fountain Bay.
We took a kayak and paddle board out one morning to explore the northern tidal lagoon in hope of seeing some small sharks, sea turtles, rays, and fish. We did see plenty of fish and one large stingray. Some of the other guests told us they had seen sea turtles and a small shark.
The Cottage Rooms
Castaway Crystal and I loved the cottages. Fountain Bay Resort has 5 stand alone cottages that sit on the edge of the beach and entrance of the southern tidal lagoon. These 900 sqft. rooms come with a king size bed, flat screen tv (never turned ours on), kitchen with full refrigerator, microwave and stove, full bathroom with granite walk-in shower and even a cool little outdoor shower. Yes, yours truly loved the outdoor shower and Crystal even sneaked a photo of me enjoying it. Had to do some cropping so we could share it with ya’ll!
Here are some photos and a little video tour of the cottages.
The Fountain Bay Restaurant
The restaurant is open for breakfast lunch and dinner and serves a nice selection of local seafood like conch, mahi, snapper as well as burgers, quesadillas, and chicken sandwiches. Because the resort is small and doesn’t accommodate a lot of guests (part of its charm), it’s best to call ahead or stop in and let the staff at the restaurant know when you’ll be dining with them.
The restaurant has a full bar and runs on the honor bar system when staff isn’t around. Just go behind the bar, grab or make what you like and write it down. They didn’t have the best rum selection, but they are forgiven because the view was so amazing. Love that Bahama blue!
Things To Know Before Going
The name is Fountain Bay Resort & Marina. However the marina is still under construction. I was told by the owner they are hoping to have some slips open by mid-summer. So for you boaters, best call ahead to see if the marina is open and operational.
The resort is a work in progress. The property has the 5 beach front cottages and a few two room suites a little off the beach. There are plans for dozens more beach front cottages but ownership is waiting to sell some of the properties before building more. While there is no half built accommodations or loud constructions sites to put a damper on the tranquility of the place, there is a lot of open land. Here is a photo of what the plans for the full development are to look like.
Would we recommend Fountain Bay Resort? Yes. The rooms are modern and great for long stays. The location is unbelievable. Waking up every morning and walking on the sand to gaze into the lagoon to see what critters might be swimming about was a peaceful feeling I was really in need of.
No traffic, no crowds, no anything…it’s just you and the beauty of Cat Island.
