If you’re anything like me, then no matter how long you spend on island, there’s never enough time to do and see everything. So much is brand new, you’re having so much fun, and before you know it, the time has come to depart. Always a sad occasion. But there’s one thing you can do to see as much as you can.

Rent a car.

Renting a car does two things. It lets you see more of the island in less time and gives you the true feeling of exploring. You feel more part of the place.

Whenever Castaway Crystal and I are on island for more than two days I always rent a car. And when I say car, I mean Jeep. I’m a Jeep guy through and through. They might be a little more expensive than a tiny Civic or something, but they are worth it. Some of those island roads can get adventurous.

Exploring Providenciales

On our last trip to Providenciales in the Turks and Caicos we rented a Jeep from Grace Bay Car Rentals. They did not pay me to say this, but this was the best Jeep rental experience I’ve had in the islands. They walked us out to the nearly new Jeep, super friendly, all smiles, and the paper work was a breeze. Here is a photo of me and my new Grace Bay Car Rentals friend.

We were spending 5 days in Provo and staying at two different hotels, Alexandra Resort and Blue Haven Resort. So we knew were going to have to do some moving around, not to mention all the cool ass places we had to see!

The Fish Fry

On our second night we found out there was a Fish Fry party on Grace Bay and that half the island usually shows up. Did this peak our interest? Why yes, yes it did.

Why hopped in the Jeep and drove down to the park where it was located. I thought we would be early, you know with island-time and all but the street was already packed and parking was scarce. So what does any smart pirate with a Jeep do? You hop the curb and park in the bushes. Problem solved.

The Fish Fry was awesome. There were lots of vendors selling food, rum, and swag. Live music was set up on stage towards the back of the park and as the rum flowed and the night drew longer, dancing took over. Castaway Crystal even jumped on stage and shook what the good lord gave her.

Provo Fish Fry

After a night of dancing and rum, the next day was all about getting away from all the resorts of Grace Bay. We were going off-grid. Our destination is known as Pirate’s Bay or Bonefish Beach I believe. It’s the southwest corner of the island and it’s completely isolated. My type of place.

Bonefish Beach/Pirate’s Bay

The road wraps around the blazing blue waters of Chalk Sound and can be a little rough in spots. Again, another reason why Jeeps kick ass. Here is a video of that drive and a little off-roading detour. I saw a slight trail going up a steep hill and was like “SQUIRREL!”

I see hill. I climb hill.

If you are spending a few days on Provo, then I HIGHLY recommend you take the drive and check out this amazing spot. Here’s is a look at where it is on a map.

Here are a few pictures to give you a taste of what this spot was like. As always, the pictures just don’t do it justice.

Jeep Life Turks and Caicos

Just looking at those photos makes me want to go back.

After exploring these deserted beaches we worked up a hell of an appetite. Everyone commenting on our live photos online were telling us we had to go check out Bugaloo’s, so that’s where we went. And I’m glad we did. What a cool place!

Located right on the water and a huge sand bar, this indoor outdoor restaurant had island energy. It was packed with tourists and locals, music was playing, conch was being cleaned out in the water, and the food was delish. Thanks for the recommendation Castaways!

And what trip to Providenciales is complete without a trip to Da Conch Shack!

Da Conch Shack Turks and Caicos

I have a lot more to write about Bugaloo’s and Da Conch Shack, but I wanted to point out that with all the places to see and things to do on Provo, on any island for that matter, having your own transportation is key. There’s always a dinner spot, a lunch spot, a beach bar to visit, a ferry to catch…how are you going to get to soak it all in? Cabs get expensive and mopeds are deathtraps, grab a Jeep and settle into the island life.

And when you do rent transportation, try and rent local.

Thanks again to everyone at Grace Bay Car Rentals. Your team was seriously one of the best I’ve experienced in my travels. My hat is off to you.

Cheers!
