The Bahamas are becoming a second home to me. Fresh off a recent charter through the Exumas, I fall deeper in love with the island nation every time I visit. There’s just something special about the waters, the people, the food, and the experiences. It’s hard to wash those salty waters off of you when you return home.
Home is the place most of us unfortunately must return when our visit to the Bahamas has ended. For many that means a visit to Nassau’s Lynden Pindling International Airport. That was where you could have found me last Saturday.
I was sitting in Rhythm Cafe in the international terminal sipping on a few SANDS beers and biting into some delicious conch fritters. There was a Bahamian man sitting two seat down from me sipping on a brilliantly red Bahama Mama cocktail. After he finished he enthusiastically orders another. I thought to myself, isn’t the Bahama Mama a touristy drink, indulged in by smiling tourists?
I guess not.
In honor of that observation, I’d like to mix up a Bahama Mama cocktail for you guys. When researching the recipe, I found nearly 10 different recipes. The one below is the most fun, and will have you dreaming about the shallow seas of the Bahamas in now time.
Bahama Mama Drink Recipe
- .5 oz light rum
- .5 oz dark rum
- .5 oz 151 (overproof) rum
- .5 oz coconut rum
- .5 oz coffee liqueur (optional)
- 1 oz pineapple juice
- .5 oz lemon juice
- Dash grenadine
Mixing Instructions: Fill a Collins glass with crushed ice. Combine the following in a shaker with ice. Pour all ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice and shake for about fifteen seconds. Strain into an ice-filled hurricane or collins glass. Top with a splash of grenadine. If you like, garnish with a cherry and pineapple wedge. Raise glass and toast.
Next time you’re sitting on a white sand beach somewhere in the Bahamas, order up a Bahama Mama, and then another. You’ll feel a warm breeze wash across you and know you are doing as the Bahamians do.
