“If My Life Were Rum” By Sammy Arriaga

You never know when or where a great song will blow into your ear. It can hit you in the car, by word or mouth, at a salty beach bar or the internet. The when and where don’t really matter after listening to it four or five times in a row, it’s all about the feeling it gives you. When you know, you know.

I was checking out the comments people where leaving on the new Blue Chair Bay Rum‘s Facebook page and I saw someone plugging their music and they left a link. Normally I’m annoyed by people leaving their advertisements in Facebook comments, but the name of the song caught my eye. The name… “If My Life Were Rum.”

Listen first.

If My Life Were Rum – Sammy Arriaga

What did you think?

Written and sung by Sammy Arriaga, a Miami native that made the move to Nashville to follow his dream. Gotta love someone that can up-route and follow their heart. In Miami Sammy spent time out on the sea fishing with his father. They would bounce between Miami and the Bahamas looking for the big one. Sounds like the perfect Castaway tale to me.

You can find a few of Sammy’s tracks on iTunes, but if you want “If My Life Were Rum” then you’ll need to go to Soundcloud and hit the download button (free). You can also find Sammy Arriaga on Facebook.com/SammyArriagaMusic and on Twitter: @Sammyarriaga

To me the song is soft and gentle, like the ocean slowly rolling in and out. The lyrics evoke visions of the Caribbean island lifestyle, or dreaming about it. It’s about taking that life and pouring it into a glass…a glass of paradise. Taking it with you where ever you go. Drinking out of the glass until you can’t drink any more. Becoming drunk on The Life.

Sounds a lot like the inspiration behind Kenny Chesney’s earlier mentioned Blue Chair Bay Rum. Taking that island lifestyle and bottling it up. Who knows maybe Kenny will someday use the song for the rum.

If My Life Were Rum Lyrics

Verse 1:
Empty glass of Captain Morgan, sittin’ in my hand,
So far off the coast that you can’t see a bit’a land,
Bet I was born a pirate, a brother of the sun,
Cause I’ve been wonderin’ what it’d taste like if my life were bottled up,

Pre-Hook:
Every second, every minute on the clock,
& Take in all these years in every drop…

Hook:
It’d probably taste like a blue lawn chair right by a bay,
A sunny day without a single drop of rain,
A tiki bar covered in words by ol’ Hemingway…
Some rusty guitar strings strum strummin’ up a bit’a buffet,
Salty breeze blowin’, aw man you gotta love it,
A good, long buzz that’ll never, ever go a-way…
Man if my life were rum, I’d probably drink my life away!

Verse 2:
Some might have it bittersweet; others have it strong,
Some dont even feel a thing cause they never lived at all,
But with a splash of love & freedom, some water on the rocks,
A hint of lime & some coconut spice can fix anybody up…

Pre-Hook 2:
So put on your flip flops, the clock aint stoppin’ for anyone, run, RUN,
If you want it to taste like a blue chair right by a bay…

Hook:
A sunny day without a single drop of rain,
A tiki bar covered in words by ol’ Hemingway…
Some rusty guitar strings strum strummin’ up a bit’a buffet,
Salty breeze blowin’, aw man you gotta love it,
A good, long buzz that’ll never, ever go a-way…
I’ll never have enough,
Man if my life were rum,
I’d probably drink my life away…

Drop me a line and let me know what you thought of the song.

Cheers Castaways!
