Today is National Margarita Day! Where’s the Salt?

Grab your Sombrero and brush up on your broken Spanish, because today is National Margarita Day! I was half tempted to take the day off work and spend it celebrating by drinking Margaritas on the beach and scaring the tourist with my tequila slurred Spanglish.

The Margarita is the number one tequila drink in the world but it origins are somewhat cloudy. Was it a Texas socialite in Acapulco who was looking for something to refresh her party guests on a hot afternoon or a bartender in Tijuana hoping to impress Rita Hayworth (née Margarita Cansino) with a drink in her honor? Regardless of who invented the margarita—the stories are legend—the tart blend of tequila, cointreau, and lime juice in a glass rimmed with salt has become synonymous with Mexico. Let the fiesta begin!

Mexico would have to be the best place to have a margarita today, the second best would have to be one of Jimmy Buffett’s famous Margaritavilles. I had one of the best margaritas ever at the Margaritaville in Las Vegas, it was the Red Bull Margarita. I knew it was going to be good when I ordered it, but after tasting it, I was literally left in awe. I’m getting chills right now just thinking about it. See below for the recipe.

I have buddy that drinks mostly Strawberry Margaritas. I find this a little, what’s the right phrase…not manly. But that’s the great thing about margaritas, they come in all different flavors and there’s sure to be one to fit your weird personality!

Margarita Recipes

Jimmy Buffett’s Perfect Margarita

  • Crushed ice
  • 3 wedges lime
  • 2 ounces gold tequila
  • 1/2 ounce blanco tequila
  • 1 1/4 ounces Rose’s Lime Juice (or substitute 1 1/4 cup Margarita Texas Mix)
  • 1 splash orange Curaçao

Put all ingredients except the 3 lime wedges into a shaker. Squeeze 2 of the lime wedges into the shaker. SHAKE WELL! Rim outside of glass only with lime. Salt only the outside of the glass. Add fresh crushed ice to glass. Strain mixture over ice. Squeeze remaining lime wedge in glass. Raise glass and toast!

Perfect Margarita Recipe

  • 1 1/2 oz. Cuervo or 1800 gold tequila
  • 3/4 oz. Cointreau
  • 3/4 oz. Grand Marnier
  • 1/2 oz. lime juice
  • 1/2 oz. orange juice
  • 2 oz. sour mix
  • Lime garnish

If using salt, place in a shallow dish. Moisten the rim of a rocks glass with lime juice from your sliced lime garnish, then dip in salt. Fill the glass with ice; add tequila, lime juice, and Cointreau; and stir a few times until chilled, then add the splash of orange juice. Raise glass and toast!

The Grumpy Garcia Margarita

From Joshua Nadel, mixologist at the Oak Room.

  • 2 ounces infused tequila (flavored with pineapple and chili pepper)
  • 1 ounce Cointreau
  • 1/2 ounce fresh lime
  • 1/2 ounce pomegranate juice

Prechill a margarita glass. Shake all ingredients in a shaker full of ice and pour into the glass. Raise glass and toast!

Red Bull Margarita

  • 3 oz Jose Cuervo® Especial gold tequila
  • 3 oz Red Bull® energy drink
  • 1 oz triple sec
  • 4 oz Sweet and Sour

Prechill a margarita glass. Shake all ingredients in a shaker full of ice and pour into the glass. Raise glass and toast!

Bangkok Margarita

  • 2 ounces Reposado Tequila
  • 2 ounces chilled pineapple juice
  • 1 ounce Domaine de Canton
  • Pineapple foam, optional
  • Pinch of Maldon salt
  • Pinch of Aleppo pepper
  • Lime

Prechill a martini glass. Shake tequila, pineapple juice, and Canton in a shaker full of ice; pour into the martini glass.  Gently top off the drink with a single layer of foam until it almost overflows.  Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Using a grater such as a Microplane,  grate lime zest over the top. Serve immediately. Raise glass and toast!

Classic Margarita

  • 1 ½ ounces tequila
  • 1 ounce Cointreau
  • ½ ounce lime juice
  • Lime wedge, for garnish

Prechill a margarita glass. Shake all ingredients in a shaker full of ice and pour into the glass. Raise glass and toast!

Margarita Tips

Give your margaritas color.
Use different flavored liqueurs to enrich the beauty of the drink. Blue curacao is most commonly used to create the “blue margarita”.

Change a fruit.
While the standard margarita calls for fresh lime or lemon juice, other fruits are acceptable to substitute in the drink. Try mango, banana, apple, strawberry, or raspberry.

Use a margarita in a dessert.
Enjoy recipes such as strawberry margarita cakes and layered margarita bites.

Margarita Day Conclusion

No, National Margarita Day isn’t a national holiday, even though if it was put to a nation wide vote we could probably make it one. It’s just a fun day that brings margarita lovers (there’s a lot of us) together and inspires us to play bartender tonight when we get home from work. Where’s the salt, where’s salt, where’s that glorious salt.

    Thank you for the info Ryan… just what I needed since it is snowing again in Chicagoland. ugh.

    My favorite, since I love all things almond flavored, is the Italian Margarita : original, on the rocks, no salt, with a shot of amaretto. YUM!
